Formula

M = R × [(1 + i)^n - 1] / [1 - (1 + i)^(-1/3)]

  • M = maturity amount
  • R = monthly deposit
  • i = annual rate / 400 (quarterly rate)
  • n = number of quarters = tenure in years × 4, rounded
  • Total deposited = R × years × 12

Assumptions

  • Interest compounds quarterly, following the common Indian bank RD convention.
  • Every monthly deposit is made on time for the whole tenure, and the rate stays fixed.
  • TDS and income tax on interest are not deducted.
  • At a 0% rate or zero tenure, maturity equals total deposits. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

RD Calculator FAQ

Answers about how this calculator works.

Which formula does this RD calculator use?
It uses M = R × [(1 + i)^n - 1] / [1 - (1 + i)^(-1/3)], where i is the quarterly rate and n is the number of quarters. This is the formula commonly published by Indian banks for RDs.
Why is RD interest lower than FD interest at the same rate?
In an RD each instalment is invested for a shorter time than the first one, so on average the money earns interest for about half the tenure.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is taxed at your slab rate and may be subject to TDS. The estimate here is before tax.
What if I miss an RD instalment?
The calculator assumes every instalment is paid. Missed instalments usually attract a penalty and reduce maturity, which this estimate does not show.
