Formula
Runway (months) = Cash ÷ (Monthly expenses − Monthly revenue)
- Cash = money in the bank today
- Monthly expenses = everything you pay out in a typical month
- Monthly revenue = cash you actually collect in a typical month
- Expenses − revenue = monthly net burn
Assumptions
- Expenses and revenue stay the same every month; growth, hiring and price changes are not modelled.
- Revenue means cash collected, not invoices raised.
- Loans, investment and other one-off cash in or out are not included.
- If revenue covers expenses there is no burn, so no runway figure is shown.
- Educational estimate only, not financial advice. Capitallytics does not execute transactions.
Runway Calculator FAQ
Answers about how this calculator works.
What is a good runway for a startup?
Many founders aim for 12 to 18 months, and start raising or cutting costs well before it falls under 6. The right number depends on how long your next milestone takes.
Should I use gross burn or net burn?
This calculator uses net burn, expenses minus revenue collected. Gross burn ignores revenue and gives a shorter, more cautious runway.
Should unpaid invoices count as revenue?
No. Use cash actually received. Invoices that are not yet paid do not pay your bills.
How can I extend my runway?
Cut recurring costs, collect receivables faster, raise prices or bring in new funding. Re-run the calculator with the new numbers to see the effect.
