Formula
B_y = (B_(y-1) + D) × (1 + r)
- B_y = balance at the end of year y (B_0 = 0)
- D = yearly deposit
- r = annual interest rate / 100
- Run for the tenure in years; interest earned = final balance - D × years
Assumptions
- The full yearly deposit is made at the start of each year and earns interest for the whole year.
- Interest compounds once a year at a fixed rate. The rate field is pre-filled at 7.1% p.a. as a starting value; the actual rate is notified by the government and can change.
- The calculator does not enforce the annual deposit limit or minimum deposit.
- Extensions, partial withdrawals and loans are not modelled.
- Educational estimate only, not financial advice. Capitallytics does not execute transactions.
PPF Calculator FAQ
Answers about how this calculator works.
Does the PPF calculator assume deposits at the start of the year?
Yes. Each yearly deposit is added before that year's interest is applied. Depositing later in the year would earn less interest in practice.
What interest rate should I enter for PPF?
Enter the currently notified PPF rate. The government reviews small savings rates periodically, so the rate over 15 years may differ from today's.
Does the calculator stop me from entering more than the PPF limit?
No. It accepts any amount. Check the current annual deposit limit yourself, as amounts above it do not earn PPF interest.
Is PPF interest taxable?
This calculator does not model tax. Check the current tax treatment of PPF contributions, interest and maturity for your regime.
Can I model a PPF extension beyond 15 years?
You can enter a longer tenure with continued deposits. Extensions without deposits are not modelled.
