Capital Gains Tax Calculator FAQ

Answers about how this calculator works.

When is a gain on shares long-term?
When the listed shares or equity fund units were held for more than 12 months before selling. Twelve months or less makes it short-term.
How does the ₹1.25 lakh exemption work?
The first ₹1,25,000 of long-term gains on listed equity in a financial year is not taxed. Only the amount above it is taxed at 12.5%.
Is cess included in the result?
No. The result is the tax at 20% and 12.5% only. Add 4% cess, and surcharge if your income is high, for the full amount.
Can I use this for debt mutual funds or property?
No. Those have different holding periods and rates. This calculator is for listed equity and equity-oriented funds only.
