Simple Interest Calculator FAQ

Answers about how this calculator works.

What is the simple interest formula?
SI = P × R × T / 100, where P is principal, R is the annual rate in percent and T is time in years.
Where is simple interest used?
It appears in some short-term loans, certain deposits that pay out interest, and as a quick approximation. Most savings and loans use compound or reducing-balance interest.
How do I calculate simple interest for months?
Convert months to years by dividing by 12. Nine months is 0.75 years.
Why is compound interest higher than simple interest?
Compound interest also earns interest on interest already added. The Compound Interest calculator shows the difference for the same inputs.
