The net worth formula, explained in plain terms
Net worth is calculated with one formula: Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. An asset is anything you own that carries resale, redemption, or exchange value. A liability is anything you owe to someone else, whether a bank, a lender, or a family member you have promised to repay.
The formula produces a single number at a single point in time — it is not a rate, not a percentage, and not a forecast. If your assets add up to ₹65 lakh and your liabilities add up to ₹22 lakh, your net worth is ₹43 lakh on that day. Tomorrow it may be slightly different because a stock moved, a bill was paid, or a loan installment reduced your outstanding principal.

First, revolving debt: only the balance you are actually carrying past the due date counts — a credit card paid in full every month is not debt, but a carried balance is a real liability at its current outstanding amount, not the credit limit.

Edge case: retirement accounts — vested vs full balance
Retirement accounts like EPF, PPF, and NPS in India, or a 401(k) or pension in other countries, should generally be counted at their current vested balance — the amount you would actually be entitled to if you left your job or accessed the account today, subject to applicable rules. A contingent liability is an obligation that only becomes real under certain conditions — a loan guarantee that only triggers if the primary borrower defaults, a pending legal claim, or a tax assessment under dispute. These do not always belong inside the core net worth formula, since including every remote possibility would make the number impossible to interpret, but they should be tracked in a visible footnote alongside your net worth calculation.

As a quick example, USD 25,000 converted at ₹83 to the dollar adds approximately ₹20.75 lakh to an INR-denominated net worth figure.
